Ham StrollersResidents of Broadwater, Durrington and Heene wards have all been enjoying the benefits of healthy walks for several years. Now, residents of Selden are doing so too.
Members of the healthy walks groups keep fit while enjoying the company of others who live nearby. The walks are organised and led by trained volunteers and have proved to be a huge success. Most of the walks are town based, but longer and slightly more challenging walks can also be organised. Annabelle Trent, Worthing Health Walks Co-ordinator, said:
With the help of £2,000 of West Sussex LAA Outcome 22 funding it has been possible for Worthing’s Walking to Health Partnership to set up a new walking group in the Selden ward of East Worthing. The new group, which goes by the name of The Ham Strollers, was launched on Thursday 25th September 2008. The group’s first walk had eighteen participants, including Worthing’s Mayor, Christine Brown. The walks of the Ham Strollers all start from Mick’s Garage Community House in Dominion Road. Led by trained volunteer walks leaders, they last from 35 to 40 minutes. The aim is to for people to go at their own pace, and gradually build up speed and fitness. All abilities are catered for and everyone is encouraged to come along. Mothers with little children in pushchairs are welcome. No special clothing is required but comfortable shoes are advised, and shower proof coats if the weather warrants them. All the walks finish with refreshments. At present the walks take place on the last Thursday of each month but they will become weekly if there is a demand. For further information contact Phil Knight (Volunteer Walk Leader) Telephone 01903 208998 or Mick’s Garage Community House, 25 Dominion Road, Telephone 01903 209006. |
